a) Eusebius (AD 324; Ecclesiastical History, 3:18:4), tells us that Christians and secular writers alike wrote of a time of persecution during the end of Domitian’s reign, namely the 15th year of his reign (AD 95-96) and that the former (for example, Irenaeus; Against Heresies, 5) said that John saw his vision on Patmos during this time. Therefore, if it is true that John wrote this book during the reign of Domitian, as well as in that same emperor’s persecution, then, a date no later than September 19 AD 96 (the date of the emperor’s death and end of the persecution) is required.
