Rey, as I said before, it's the explaining away that I am wary of. It's not neatness itself that is frowned on, it's neatness that smooths out tensions that do exist by pushing this or that into the background. Sometimes tensions can be reconciled...

Wondering out loud since that's what I do: why is it that understanding something tightly automatically incurs doubt? Omnipresence: God is everywhere; there is no where that He can not be found save where there is No There. Tight package. Makes se...

Profile Information

Tell us about yourself
I am a senior in philosophy at Calvin College, and previously studied theology at a the Bible College of Wales (University of Wales, Bangor). I pastored youth for 3 years at Liberty Christian Church, and I am a husband and father of two. I enjoy theology, biblical studies, politics, current events, the arts and cultural criticism, photography, philosophy, technological gadgetry, and open source software.

Particular areas of interest are epistemology, Ancient Near Eastern (ANE) studies, Biblical Theology, Eschatology, aesthetics, and more.

I am a contributor to the blog "Dust and Light", and run my own blog, "Theology and Culture".
How would you describe yourself theologically?
I BELIEVE in God, the Father, Almighty;
Maker of heaven and earth:

And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord:
Conceived by the Holy Spirit,
Born of the virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified; dead, and buried.
He descended into hell,
The third day he rose again from the dead,
He ascended into heaven,
And sat on the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church;
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.
Amen.

Lies, Damned Lies, and Hermeneutics: A Postmodern Take on Biblical Historiography

Here is a recent post of mine, hosted at the collaborative blog, "Dust and Light."

Mark Twain made famous the old quip, “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.” The point of the idiom is that even such supposedly “brute facts” as statistics can be interpreted to have multiple meanings.

Biblical Inerrancy: From the Bible, or the Enlightenment?

This is a post from the blog that I co-author, "Dust and Light."

If you have not read my very brief “Primer on the Enlightenment,” I would recommend reading it as a starting point to this post.

Martin Luther King Jr. on the Collapse of Evangelicalism

Here is a post from my blog, "Theology & Culture."

Here is Martin Luther King Jr.’s prediction on the recently discussed collapse of evangelicalism.

He wrote this to his fellow clergymen in 1963, taken from his “Letter From a Birmingham Jail.” He was speaking in the context of the civil rights movement, trying to wake the slumber of the Christian church that simply accepted the status quo.

But how much do his words apply to our… Continue

Clearly dude. I was being sarcastic about your cavalier response. Rey thought I might kill you for it, but it was my generous day.

Correct. There are, in fact, a number of SBC churches that are solidly in the Reformed Camp. The "Founders Conference" is a branch of the SBC that places a great emphasis on the Doctrines of Grace. They would like to see a return to the historic creeds and confessions. Actually, while in Japan, I don't have a PCA church to attend. Right now I will very possiblt be attending a Baptist Church when I return. The SBC church I attended in Birmingham was long on eisegiesis and short on exegesis-no real exposition of Scripture.I assume you have looked at the Westminster Confession?

Aaron,
Thanks for the message. I really enjoy it in Japan, however, I plan on coming back for good in about three years. I am in the states at the moment. One more week and back to Japan. I became increasingly disturbed over the increasing use of a "seeker-sensitive paradigm" that was utilized at the SBC church I attended. The PCA was formed out of the PCUSA and a firm desire to uphold the auhority of Scripture> I started attending a PCA church where the exposition of
Scripture is so awesome-have been there ever since. Feel free to write again sometime-Ken
