This issue is tough. Some denominations have had 3 groups the Members, Unbelievers, and the innocent. Thus the age of accountability(AofA) argument.... Nobody going to defend AofA and childhood innocence?

Ahh. I see. I misunderstood what you said. My bad.

Sorry, Craig. I agree with your statement and was speaking to the idea that our children are saved through our blood line.

Salvation is a gift that we are free to reject.

Concerning covenantal. If all children born to believers are therefor saved then why in the heck do so many grow up and not believe? Statistically, this is absurd.

Luther says that even an infant can have faith because they can hear the Word proclaimed. Just because we can't measure it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. To quote Luther, "Everything depends on the Word and commandment of God."

"...caught up in something that they don't really understand." Isn't that all of a child's life? They don't understand, so we teach them. Teaching and learning is a lifelong experience with different stages of development. I don't want my kids to ...

Oh, man I think I just deleted a comment here in reply to yours. GRRRR.

Any, the gist was that it was the degree of absolutism that I find a bit off-putting with some of the more intense Calvinists, and I don't think it is something that justifies much dogmatism.

Also, I am not sure whether there is much practical effect for our Christian lives either way. Does it look or feel any different to me whether I come to God due to free will or because I was pre-destined and drawn? Not that I can see.

And, really, do Arminians think God is any less sovereign? Not at all. Do Calvinists evangelize less because God's plan will be accomplished either way? Not that I can see. So, at some point it becomes "angels on the heads of pins" stuff, even if it is fascinating.

Wow, I would not even know where to dive into that thread! :0) From what I have seen, though, you are doing fine. The problem with this entire debate, however, is that we really have no answers. Scripture does not provide the answer since it provides seemingly clear support for both sides.

BTW, have you read "Why I am not a Calvinist"? It is a great little book.

Not necessarily smarter, just been around the stuff more possibly.

A consequence of being so old (42), I guess. And yes, the debate was pretty lopsided. Eventually gets to that point, and then folks resort to "you ain't really Christian, then" and things can get ugly.

Anselm, you may have come across me at the Parchment and Pen blog, where I have been a regular commenter off and on, or at the associated Submerging blog, where I was a blogger. I have also been a regular on the Christian Forums groups on origins issues for many years, and before that was a regular at Talk Origins, holding down the Theistic Evolution front.

So, if you have delved into these issues on the internet much, it is very possible you have stumbled across me before!

Anselm,

I've been run off by both types. Raised instrumental. Don't really give a hoot about the issue. The instrumental churches in Southern California signed on early to the Church Growth Movement. So I went non-instrumental after being called a sinner from the pulpit for home-schooling and being asked to leave because my wife's cancer while pregnant ran counter to their plans for "a happy church."

Over the years, I've been run off from churches for home-schooling (once more), for my views on eschatology (twice), and only once for Genesis (and I think that was really eschatology).

Interesting how much the creeds of the anti-creedal contain. I'm a heretic among people who officially deny any basis for calling me a heretic. Go figure.

I am very literal in my views. I just reject dispensationalisms version of literalism. What Scripture seems to say to those in our culture who are too lazy to study just doesn't sit right with me.

If I say Mercedes Benz, you won't imagine Mr. Benz' daughter. That's what modern literalism requires. Modern literalism won't let me call Mercedes a car.

You?

Blessings.

Poverty, Hunger, Disease even environmental issues have the potential to be deadly. Hunger and Disease unquestionably kill everyday.

Is it the governments job to take care of the poor? To some extent Yes.
