i'll be honest here, I don't know the answer to why. I assume it has something to do with the development of the Baptismal rite and the promises the catechumens made during their baptism, but I'm making a guess with no sources to cross-reference.

I will be the first proponent of infant baptism to agree with Marv here concerning the tradition. Infant baptism didn't become the norm until sometime around the fourth or fifth century, although we do have evidence of infant baptisms as early as ...

Luther did say that every time you wash your face, you should remember your baptism.

Agreed.

Fair enough. I too have adopted paedobaptism, having originally come from the Baptist tradition. It is a hot topic within my family as well, perhaps why I get so touchy about it. My mother refuses to accept my infant baptism as valid and I refer ...

So, in other words, you just like pushing our buttons ;)

Thre was a statement in the OP that said "only believers are to receive baptism." I'm looking for proof that infants do not have belief and thus should not be baptized.

Paraphrase from the ESV Study Bible.

Those verses point to an outward confession of an inward belief and they are silent as to when the outward confession should be made. Thus, it is quite possible that something like confirmation counts even though it happens long after the baptism.

One can see from these three points how infant baptism is ne-gated in their eyes. To begin with, the foundation of infant baptism, namely the Abrahamic covenant, has been replaced by the new covenant. All the members of the new covenant will know ...

That's only one image of baptism. Maxwell Johnson has a wonderful book entilted Images of Baptism in which he discusses four different images of baptism from the NT. It's well worth the read.

I think we can tie the tradition to an event prior to Acts. I'm talking about the Resurrection.

Rey, I would be glad to let you borrow my copies of the Circle Trilogy for you to read. (It would save Scott shipping internationally.) I thought they were an ok read. I wasn't as whigged out by them as I was the Left Behind series. It's been my ...

It's probably one of the few things I'll agree with Piper on.

Really? So God can't work through a little bit of water? God can only work through immersion?

Safe in Seattle

I have not been active much lately, and thought I should fill everyone in on what has been happening.

Saturday morning, I left my apartment and wife in Columbia, SC. Flash forward four days and 2900 miles later...I am in Burien, WA (a suburb of Seattle) for my new job as Director of Child, Youth, and Family ministries for Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in SeaTac. My first official day is Sunday.

For the most part, the trip was pretty uneventful...with the exception of Wyoming. Just a few mile… Continue

An Answer to Prayers

A few weeks ago I posted a lament about my job search. I would like to thank everyone for their prayers. God really does hear the laments of his people and answer their prayers.

Following up on my last post, I want to let everyone know that I have been offered a position as Director of Child, Youth, and Family Ministries for a Lutheran congregation in Seattle, WA and will probably be moving out in the next two… Continue

Frustration

I debated on whether or not I should post this here.

So, I'm in a bad mood because I'm frustrated. I'm frustrated and looking for a pity party. I didn't sleep well last night, my wife is in a bad mood, and to top it off, my internet went down for a few minutes (my first attempt to write this post). So here's the deal. I've been applying for jobs since about February. I've applied for about forty jobs. I've had several first interviews and even a second interview...but nothing. Absolutely no job… Continue

Some Days Are Harder Than Others!

Yesterday, I had what I refer to as one of my "agnostic days." These are days where I question my sense of call, my ministry, and everything in between. I'm pretty irritable during these days. I'm just grumpy and all around ticked off at everything (God included) for no reason at all. These "agnostic days" come on suddenly and normally dissipate after a day of so. They always lead to some kind of insight about myself or my future ministry.

I think what set it off this time was I have been readi… Continue

Prayers for the ELCA

For those of you who don't know, the ELCA's August Churchwide Assembly is fast approaching. Rev. Mark Hanson, the presiding bishop, has called for the members of the ELCA to pray for the assembly in the 50 days leading up to opening of the assembly. I too would ask for prayers in the time leading up to the Churchwide Assembly, not just from members of the ELCA, but from all our Christian brothers and sisters.

And, by the way, 'bedside manners of Dr House'.... well said. It is a gift to truly know oneself.
