Calvin was a Spirit led genius. He underscored the sovereignty of God, spent years expositing the text, every major commentary today refers to his commentaries, he had a way of presenting the very complex in a simple manner, and streamlined many doctrinal issues.

He also authored a system with much care on how he presented man's responsibility and God's sovereignty which when taken by his followers (specifically Beza) was carried farther than what I think Calvin himself would have gone.

Be that as it may, the man is one of the greatest theologians not because of his soteriology (or the way it was further flawed by his followers) but on account of all that other stuff I mentioned.

I may not agree with him, but I respect him immensely.
