Tell us about yourself
I am an advertising guy. I write. I find that I’m not as smart as I used to be, and that I never was as smart as I thought I was. Oh, and I am very happy to be saved by grace, because there’s nothing else that could have saved me.
How would you describe yourself theologically?
More dispensational than not. More literal than not. Kind of literary too—l like Psalms and cool words.
Who is the greatest theologian in the last 2000 years? (Besides Biblical People!)
I don’t know. I like Edwards. I like Baxter (Richard, not Skunk, although I like him as a guitar player).

Only to God.

When I was a little kid, I heard a story about three blind guys (and a blind girl) who went to see an elephant. The guy who grabbed it’s tail concluded that an elephant was like a snake. The guy who grabbed the trunk concluded that an elephant was like a pillar. The guy who leaned against the side of the beast concluded that an elephant was like a wall. The girl grabbed the ear and concluded that an elephant was a like a really nice handbag (I made that part up).

I think we do the same thing wi… Continue

Hallmark Card Preaching.

I was pleased to read Xulon’s blog on expository preaching a few minutes ago. He mentioned springboard messages, that start with a verse that appears to be relevant to a point the preacher wants to make and spring into the preacher’s point. Using this method, we can make strong “scriptural” cases for voting, not voting, drinking coffee, not drinking coffee, dancing, not dancing, not dancing while drinking coffee, dancing only when drinking coffee…blah, blah, blah. And he mentioned suppose… Continue

James Gibbons

This is a true story.

My brother has an evil sister in law. This woman, for reasons that I won’t get into, hates men. She hates men her age. She hates men older than she is. She hates men younger than she is. She hates teenage boys. She hates little boys. She probably even hates male babies.

One day, all the cousins were together. Including my brother’s 6-year-old (at the time) son, Mark, and his four girl cousins. Aunt Luella (rhymes with Cruella) decided to “take the kids for ice cream.”

So they all ran to Aunt L… Continue

Regarding the Rapture

I published this poem elsewhere—in a secular poetry publication, actually. Thought y’all might enjoy.

In these last days I’ve been having questions,
concerns, hard issues,
about the trumpet, about the shout,
about what comes next.

Will I hit my head on the way up?
Will it raise a bump?
Will it leave me before the glassy sea
with plaster in my hair?

Should I install timers, auto shot-off switches
on steamers, irons, stoves, and tea kettles,
So as not to leave a fire hazard behind?

If I leave… Continue

It’s Getting Dark

I have a problem with autumn. It’s dark. Now I hear people talk about how there’s just as much light, how beautiful the blue autumn sky is, how all the firey colors in the mountains make them just a picture. And all that is true. But it doesn’t change the fact that autumn is dark.

I suffer from a mild case of SADD, that thing where you get depressed if you don’t get enough light. I find myself wanting to go into hibernation around this time of year. The days get shorter. The nights get longer.… Continue

Hi James,

I was going to give you a gift but I squandered all my credits on Char and her insatiable appetite for sushi. She's like cat woman, which makes sense of her love for "kittehs" We need to feed her if we want her to stay around. ;)

Thanks James; prayer is reciprocated. I hope your coffee house bible study goes well and opens some hearts.

I saw you pop on and had to try to catch you. :) You have my prayers, absolutely - for all that is affecting. All will be well, brother. God has good intentions toward you, and you are not incompetent (quite the contrary), although yes, lean on Him. It's what He wants.

Troy - well, I'm relieved too. He had such a great opening game. He's such fun to watch. I love his hair. Apparently so do advertisers. :)

Me - I'm trying to process much that has been swallowed up in the mechanized yaw of the American death machine. I wish I could put it in visual terms. Grieving is something you do in your spare time. No wonder people take so long to come to terms with loss - they never have a chance to really do so. I can't imagine going through any of this without the presence of the Lord.

I am getting back to painting - everyone keeps telling me to start selling my work- is it a sign? ;)

I am so happy to see you back. Maybe you'll write another piece on autumn. I still remember your blog from last year.

Peace & grace,

Holly

Hey James! How have you been? Anything new and exciting, my honorary Yinzer bro?

Saw your FB comment. Don't have access to FB at work, but I wanted to reply. If your statement is true (i.e., the Dems have read the 1200 page bill), then explain to me why at a townhall mtg a woman was reading a provision straight from the bill about end of life 'care' and Sen. Specter flatly denied that the bill said that. If he had read it, then he's lying; if he hadn't read it, then he's vastly ill-informed. Either way it's SCARY!

James,

How did our little buddy Blake do with his project?

I prayed for him.

Peace,

H
