You quoted a scribe saying that it's Jesus talking and I'm the one playing with the Scriptures? It's also a common trick to blur the categories. Precision is a threat to some teachings.

You highlighted what the scribe said and said it was Jesus talking.

Ideal World or The Kingdom of God?

Ideal World or The Kingdom of God?

Several years ago, I taught a class on Christian Ethics at the local Moody Extension School. Through my studies, I became more convinced of my suspicion that the Church is mistaken when they make evangelism or even some "tend the culture" mandate they think they have into a matter of clashing moralities. I frequently say that Christianity is not a morality.

I am reading To Will & To Do by Jacques Ellul and he is making similar… Continue

Pining Away for the Same Kingdom, Different Day

Pining Away for the Same Kingdom, Different Day

A recent article in the Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society caught my eye, titled Literacy and Biblical Knowledge: The Victorian Age and Our Own by Timothy T Larson. Dr Larson argues, as shown by the main title, that the poverty of modern society’s biblical knowledge places them at a disadvantage in understanding literature and not just literature which contain biblical themes or references. Unfortunately, as indica… Continue

A Philisophical Basis for the Right.

Here is a blog which I think nails the root of something quite wrong with the right wing rhetoric. I look at what the "Christians" are doing in the political arena these days and they have lost their moral voice. Even as they screech about gays and abortion, they are swallowing whole another brand of eugenetics. Here is a portion: Yet as bizarContinue

The Power of the Tongue

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, (Proverbs 18:21)

A couple of weeks back, I went to visit my family. While there, my brother told me that my high school choir director died that week at 82. First some history.

It may surprise you to know that when I was seventeen, I was loud and obnoxious. Very smart, very opinionated, but not very knowledgeable or focused. We’ve all known teens like this, if not been teens like this. (Side note: One time Mary said “From what you’ve… Continue

A Man Was Going Down ...

Jesus was speaking to a crowd and in the group, a lawyer who upon hearing that the law said to love your neighbor asked “Who is my neighbor?” Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him up, and went off, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road, but when he saw the injured man he passed by on the other side. So too a Levite, when he came up to the place and saw him, passed by on thContinue

xulon,

http://blog.revealnow.com/reveal/files/reveal_granger_slides.ppt

at that link is a power point of Willow Creek's 2008 results. These aren't the really bad ones that, I guess, they did in 2004 (I can't seem to find those anywhere). Here is a short article about Willow Creek's reaction in 2007. If I remember correctly, after the 2004 results the leaders decided to change how they do their programs and poured millions of dollars into a different seeker sensitive model. In 2007 they decided that didn't work. Now, they are doing a different seeker sensitive model, and I guess that is what is being measured in the powerpoint linked above.

Yes, they teach that they are separate events, but I don't think you have considered why they teach that (or if you have considered, you do not allow in your writings that maybe there are reasons). Rather, you just write as if they for no reason arbitrarily split the same event into two events.

Good challenge, as always. I guess knowing that I used to be of a dispensationalist view, I felt I understood why, or what Biblical passages are used to show there is a split between the two events.

Yeah, I really was being silly. Yes, I do believe what I wrote, but I try to emphasise when I am being silly/joking with smiley's like this :) or ;) or :P. But I guess I have a knack for stirring. I did not realise that all of Theologica pens me as anti-dispensationalist. I am not too bothered by more progressive dispensationalism as I read from people like yourself, Rey and Marv. But I do struggle with the Hal Lindsey, Jack Van Impe, Tim LaHaye, etc, teachings. They seem so extreme, as in line with classical dispensationalism. But I shall try and lay off for now. I don't want to offend. Thanks xulon.

Sorry to hijack your thread. I really was just playing around, not trying to stir, just making silly joking comments.

I do struggle though that you keep telling me I know not very much about dispensationalism. Of course, I probably don't read the intricacies of it like you or Rey, since I am not convinced of a good bit of it's position (at least as I have understood classical dispenationalism from the reading I have done). But it is my understanding, and I don't see how this is not true, that dispensationalism teaches that the rapture and final coming are two separate events. My comment simply said that I believe they are the same event.

Xulon; IN 2 peter 1, Peter has given a personal testimony: "We heard, we saw", However, The" prophetic scripture is more sure" than many claims of having seen miracles.
When you just spoke of "personal revelation" were you speaking of inspiration, illumination, or some special understanding (interpretation) that everyone else lacks? My understanding of these terms: 1.Inspiration-The out-breathing of God's spirit, guaranteeing that the thing written (graphe) is all and only what God intended. 2. Illumination: The Holy Spirit giving proper understanding of what God has spoken, or written through His prophets.
3. Translation: The accurate transferance of a message from one language, into another language. 4. Interpretation: the explanation, in detail, of the meaning of the text. 5. application: Obedience.
Taking 2 Peter 1:20 literally: "no prophecy of scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. v21 no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man..." seems to me to be speaking of the ORIGINATION of prophesy or scripture. because, Certainly, much (false) prophesy and interpretation was, and still is originating by the will of man!
I'm not seeking argument, brother, only understanding.

xulon; I find myself in agreement with you about 99.999% of the time, however, would you reconsider your use in your last entry, where Peter wrote:..."No prophecy of scripture is of any private interpretation, but holy men of God spoke/wrote as they were borne along by the Spirit of God.." There seems to be a common misunderstanding, and mis application, that the person quoting, preaching from, or explaining scripture were protected against error.
I think the correct meaning is that the prophets who originally spoke and wrote scripture, were not selecting their words based upon their limited understanding,
But were carried along by the Holy Spirit, thereby guaranteeing that what he wrote/spoke was exactly what God meant and intended.
The context, in Peter, seems to be supporting the accuracy, and dependability of the Scripture, rather than later "interpreters".
Pls let me know if I've made this plain or confusing, or if I mis-understood your use of the verse. (I've retyped this three times and am still not sure that I have said what I mean! Grace to you, Brother

You didn’t hijack anything. I did the hijacking if anything. “Love is a very vulnerable spot and while God does not call us to a love that is a doormat he does call us to love. What does that look like?” I better not bring it up. I’m no better at talking about love than I am at understanding it. God seems to know how screwed up I am and for 20yrs has seemed to make me aware of His love in every part of the bible. It’s either the primary part of what I see or secondary. The law=wisdom with love, call of Samuel=gentleness with love, prophets=warning, anger, wrath with injured love
