Profile Information

Tell us about yourself
I’m come from the stereotypical West Virginian, having a coalminer dad and stay-at-home mom. Although I grew up implicitly considering myself a Christian (for some undisclosed reason) it wasn’t until December of 2002 – during my senior year at Marshall University – that I first believed in Jesus Christ and began a life of following Him and His teachings (i.e. Orthodox Christianity).

In 2003 I graduated from Marshall University with a B.B.A. in Marketing. Upon graduating I began working within the banking industry, particularly in the field of employee benefits as a sales representative. During this time I perceived a strong sense of calling into the pastoral ministry and have been pursuing this track ever since the fall of 2003.

My journey towards pastoral ministry began with my resignation from the bank and subsequent mentoring by a well respected and seasoned Pastor in Cranberry, PA (2004). While in PA I decided to pursue further training and opted for seminary. Given the fact that I readily identified myself with Pentecostalism and the Word of Faith Movement, I began my seminary studies at Regent University, jointly enrolled in their Master of Divinity (M.Div.) and Master of Arts in Leadership programs.
In December 2005 I married my best friend, Jessica. Today we’ve been married for nearly 4 years and have 3 children between the ages of 1 to 11. In December of 2006 we packed our bags and moved back to West Virginia.

While attending Regent University I began to embrace the teachings of Reformed Theology (more below) and for various reasons I’ve since transferred from Regent University to Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in order to complete my M.Div.

My family and I are currently attending Redeemer Presbyterian Church in America with plans on becoming members. It is also my hope to begin pursuing ordination through the Presbyterian Church in America in the near future.
How would you describe yourself theologically?
Christian – Simply put, I’m a believer and follower of Jesus Christ.

Orthodox - In general, and not in all the particulars, I affirm the historic Christian faith which is best summarized in such historical creeds and confessions as the Apostles Creed, Nicene Creed, Athanasian Creed, The Canons of Dort, The Westminster Confession of Faith, and The Cambridge Declaration.

Reformed - Stemming from the Protestant Reformation I acknowledge the sovereignty of God over all of life, the doctrines of grace, the Five Solas, and covenantal theology.

Missional - What a vague term, turning in over 1.5 million hits on a Google search. For me, when I say that I’m missional I’m saying that I intentionally pursue the mission of Jesus Christ (see Matt. 28.18-20) to make disciples of all people by faithfully engaging my culture with the pure, unadulterated gospel.

Continuationist – It is my belief that the gifts of the Holy Spirit (see 1 Cor. 12-14; Eph. 4.---; Rom. 12) continue today (not to be mistaken with Pentecostalism). Recently I quit calling myself a charismatic due to its ambiguities and somewhat negative correlation.

Presbyterian - In particular I adhere to a form of church government that relies upon a plurality of elders in overseeing the teaching, mission, discipline, administration of the sacraments, and nurture of the local church body. Too boot, although created equal in value and dignity (Gen. 1.27), men and women compliment each other through differing roles in marriage and the church. With this in mind I affirm that only males can serve as ruling or teaching elders within the local congregation (For a summary of complementarianism, go here and here. For an extensive overview for the eager student download Recovering Biblical Manhood and Womanhood: A Response to Evangelical Feminism)

Ever changing – I’m ever changing into the image and likeness of Jesus Christ, continually forsaking myself and my sin by looking to Him as the fountainhead of all grace in my life’s transformation.
Who is the greatest theologian in the last 2000 years? (Besides Biblical People!)
John Calvin and Jonathan Edwards

Finding Community in "The Office"

From my blog: Reformed and Reforming:

In the book Truth or Consequences: The Promise and Perils of Postmodernism, Millard Erickson said: “There is value in the postmodern emphasis on community versus individuality” (pg. 201). Both of these threads of postmodernism are captured within The Office’s genre of production, mockumentary.

What is mockumentary?

The Office is filmed in a particular genre of film called mockumentary. M… Continue

Facebook Christianity

Being a minimal to moderate user of Facebook for two years, I’ve been flabbergasted at times by reading people’s ”religious views” in comparison to their profile. How can someone claim Christianity in any expression (i.e. Christian, Follower of Christ, Baptist, Presbyterian, etc…), yet not portray Christianity in the very life they live? So, based upon my own person unscientific research, I’ve concluded that Facebook is exhibiting a new form of Christianity that I’ve simply dubbed, “Facebook Chr… Continue

Culture After the Fall

After understanding culture from a Biblical perspective, it is important to understand the implications of the Fall upon the originally good cultural activities commanded by God of mankind. In his book – Creation Regained – Albert Wolters shares why it is vitally important for us to understand the relationship between sin and creation and culture:

The central point to make is that, biblically speaking, sin… Continue

Roger, thank you for taking the time out of your schedule to dialogue with me via e-mail. Before getting starting, could you please share a little about yourself and what encouraged you to begin blogging?

What is Culture?

If you were to scan the entirety of the Bible front-to-back you would not find a word or definition of culture. With this being the case we need to begin with the English word “culture” and see if this concept matches anything the Bible teaches so that we can see what exactly the Bible says about culture.

Culture Defined

The English word culture is originally derived from the Latin word “colere.” Colere is an agricultural word that means to “tend, guard, cultivate, and till.” From this point c… Continue

Jesse; were these prophecies of future events, and if so, were they fulfilled? How do you know that the interpretation truly interpreted true tongues? I'm not trying to start an argument with you.
I have witnessed two charismatic ladies arguing who's "word of knowledge" was the most authorative, because the messages were totally contradictory.

Happy Birthday, Jesse. I've just finished reading through your page.
I also believe in the continuation of spiritual gifts, some might not be listed, specifically, in scripture. (helps) But, being a Baptist, we virtually never talk about spiritual gifts, such as tongues and healing.
I'm curious: Have you ever heard anyoneone prophesying in tongues in a presby church?

Hey, Congratulations, brother! That is great news! There is, in my opinion, no greater demonstration of God's blessing than the joy that He gives us in marriage and family. God bless you friend, and may He continue to bless your family!

First of all, welcome to Theologica.

Second, you have re-aroused my interest in the Servetus argument and, by resurrecting the old post, resurrected a thought I've been mulling over for a while. If you get a chance, tell me what you think. I commented after you.

Finally, again, welcome.
