Yes, Josh, I recognize the phenomenon you're talking about. And I think you're onto something with all this. Am glad that some of what I offered seemed helpful for you; hopefully you will continue to find your voice as you write, and be able to refi…

'Am curious why you think there are not three-in-one, Joshua, and why you think that this idea is somehow liberal? ' I was more referring to my view of Scripture being relatively 'liberal,' as ScottL points out. I don't like the words 'conservative…

Thanks Joanne, that's really insightful - and exactly the kind of criticism that I've been hoping for. I can see how I've been quite confusing at times. Some of that has been down to my utilizing some previous work that wasn't written in satirical f…

Joshua, I am what is probably a typical reader. So how things hit me are probably how the average person is going to read something. I will be able to hang in there if, visually, the paragraphs are not really thick. It feels claustrophobic when ther…

I don't even know that he did, but I have just about the most liberal view of Scripture of anyone else at my Bible College. Don't let me wind you up; I'm not trying to. Some people just conclude quite comfortably that I'm just in a different religio…

I... pretty much agree with everything you just said, which makes it all the more likely that others will soon post a disagreeing comment. I don't see how it's helpful to perceive 'Father,' 'Son' and 'Holy Spirit' as three different people, except f…

Thanks, Josh. Good stuff.

Thanks Scott, that's really encouraging. I completely understand and empathize with your point on needing to provide hope instead of merely pointing out problems. I do not mean to suggest that everything about evangelicalism is wrong, or even that m…

Josh - I understand what you are looking to do, and I think you accomplish it. What struck me was this statement near the beginning of the post - The church-lovers will try to sway us. They’ll protest that we need to have more patience, to wait an…

Joshua. I admit that I only had time to peruse what you've got here but I'm having a difficult time understanding what your main point is - unless, of course, it's to rant?

Oh, sorry... can I merge them all into one?

Profile Information

Tell us about yourself
A Mattersey Bible College student. I'm the sort of person who'd put 'run-of-the-mill Mattersey student' here for a laugh, if it wasn't for the fact that Mattersey faculty would tell me off for it. So I'll be very clear: you will probably not turn out like me if you go to Mattersey.
How would you describe yourself theologically?
You will call me highly post-modern and liberal.

To be more explicit, I perceive sin as being broken, as opposed to breaking a moral code. I perceive salvation as a change of being, as opposed to a change of belief. I perceive heaven as a transformed present, as opposed to life after death. I perceive Jesus' death as participation, as opposed to substitution. I perceive the Bible as our heritage, as opposed to our God. I perceive Israel's purpose as being more or less the same as Christianity's purpose and refute fanciful divisions of God's personality, such as the Law/Grace Hypothesis. I perceive the Christian's purpose to be bringing Heaven to people rather than people to Heaven.

I strive for a church focused on social action rather than a weekly performance. I strive for a tithe that is spent on the transformation of a community rather than its entertainment. I strive for a communion embodied by a feast for the homeless that takes us out of our comfort zone rather than a pathetic ceremony for us to reflect on what misery sight Jesus was and thank him that we can be so comfortable. I strive for teaching that creates understanding rather than containing beliefs. A strive for a spirituality that understands tongues as a statement of intended inclusion rather than a proof of present status. I strive for the death of the pitiful concept of 'heresy.'
Who is the greatest theologian in the last 2000 years? (Besides Biblical People!)
J.R.R. Tolkien. I can actually justify that to myself, though probably not to anyone else.
