Why I L-O-V-E Being a Christian

1. The Living God is my Father.

2. More than just doctrinal truths, I have the unshakable promises of a Person who loves me and will keep me saved.

3. The God who saved me and is saving me and will save me has not left me alone: He is in me and accomplishes His will in and through me.

4. What God wants from and for me, more than anything else, is to get to know Him intimately.

5. Jesus has entrusted not only the Gospel to me but also the Holy Spirit, who makes the Gospel effective.

6. God i… Continue

Just a thought before I go . . . kinda

Just a thought before I go,
To whom it may concern:
Traveling twice the speed of sound
It's easy to get burned.
1 (This means there's a footnote below)

This won't be long but it's important. Or I think it's important.

It is well established in psychological and sociological circles that if a relatively healthy person joins a dysfunctional group, the healthy person becomes unhealthy.

If someone who comes from a dysfunctional family joins a dysfunctional group, it's quic… Continue

Maturing in Christ: Our Role in Sanctification

I asked a question about this matter on a discussion I began, realizing even as I asked the question that I was not being nearly specific enough to limit the exchanges to the rather narrow corridor of thought I was going down myself. And while this post won't answer my question definitively, hopefully they will be more helpful than my random, disjointed articulations of thoughts I attempted there… Continue

Concerns about Favorite Books of the Bible

N.B. - Please understand that I am not referring to anybody here at Theologica in the things I am about to write. I'm only talking about the other Christians "out there" and how They might have a problem, reflect a tendency, blah, blah, blah.

I repeat: I am in no way, form, or fashion talking about you. I'm talking about Them, and we all know who They are. "They" are hidden reefs, dry clouds, fruitless trees, twice dead, wild waves of fluff, rogue stars.

In Defense of Seminaries and Seminarians

Let me be clear from the start: I do not believe every pastor or believer needs to go to seminary.

I do, however, believe that going to seminary can be profitable. And I cannot think of a good reason not to go to seminary if the opportunity presents itself (all other things being equal).

There is - as noted by Mark Noll,… Continue

My wife and I took a ride Saturday, April 4th, to celebrate our 29th anniversary (which was the next day). Here are some photos taken in the Hill Country of Texas between Vanderpool and Leakey on Ranch Road 337:

Starting out on RR 337 just west of RR 187. The road begins with a rapid ascent into the hills.

One of the passes on 337, this particular stretch of road being the best of the Three Sisters (RR 335, 336, 337). The three combine for a 100 mile-plus loop.

A typical turn, one of about twenty or so winding along 337.

Taking a turn for the better. It was a great time.

I really hope you will reconsider leaving Theologica. You have a zealous heart, Dr. Mike. You remind me of a fiery OT guy for whom love wasn't sticky sentimentality, but something fierce and grounded in true compassion. You may butt heads with people, but you make them think.

Peace & grace,

Holly

Since it's a bit off topic from the discussion and I don't want to derail xulon's blog:

My pastor at my last church asked me to wear my class-As to service on the weekend of Veteran's Day ( I had just got back from Iraq a few months earlier ). He was completely derailed when I said, "No, and please don't ask me to stand, either." He must have thought I was just embarrassed or something, because the next Sunday he gave a short speech about my humility and such and asked me stand to be recognized. I was not happy with that at all. I had to explain why, later.

Dr Mike; I thot we were already friends and that you had merely changed your picture. I should change MY picture...it is 20 years old. But, every picture they've tried to take, since then, broke the camera!

Dr Mike,

A joy and honor to be in such austere company as yourself, Kind Sir. I'm well versed, after hosting a simila site for many years, in the etiquette of online debate and ethical cause.

I am excited to have found such an extensive site and look forward to what I will learn in you.

As for the Who - well said. Pink Floyd - were great but too overplayed. Bob Dylan - a true writer. Though my tastes are varied anywhere from Gregorian Chant to Irish music to rock oldies to the laterst my children give ear to.

Biker. Well, I am not one to be labeled. But I do share a special relationhip in my faith when I am out on one of my bikes. I ride alone enjoying the beautiful back roads of Southern New Hampshire.

Thank you again for your warm welcome.

God bless and embrace you.
