Phil James replied to Frank P. Spinella Jr.'s discussion Salvation for the Gentiles: Why Such Slow Traction?
"Frank, it seems to me that there are at least two approaches to doctrine- especially that which is theology proper. One treats it as explanatory; the other sees it as fencing the truth in. One puts the finger on the dot- 'there!' The other…"

Tell us a little about yourself
I'm a wondering Mere Christian who's daily repenting (and blushing) from the sheer volume of my past certainties. Committed to the foolishness of divine glory as revealed in the face of Christ. The husband (Oh, happy thought) to Sandi. A father of six. Befuddled reader, aspiring prophet of corporeality, and chili dog’s (fully loaded) greatest advocate. On any given day I may be found sinning, cooking, repenting, conversing, struggling, reading, apologizing, imbibing, wondering (quietly and out loud) and smelling old books.-- Order varies
How would you describe yourself theologically (ie. what do you believe)?
A Nicene catholic in the Anglican communion who trusts a great deal more and knows a great deal less than I used to.
Who, outside of Bible characters, is your favorite theologian or pastor of the last 2,000 years.

Letters to My Kids: Be Who You Are- Ascension Day

Posted on May 10, 2013 at 7:32am 0 Comments

Blessed Ascension Day!

It’s been 40 days since Christ overcame death on Easter morning. Scripture tells us that it was on this day that he ascended into the presence of his father and sat down at his right hand. There are all sorts of important things to say about that amazing event, but I hope you remember one in particular. Today is about who you truly are as a Son of Adam and Daughter of Eve.

God created men and women to rule over creation in his stead. That is what the…

Blessed Ascension Day!

God our Father,
make us joyful
in the ascension of your Son Jesus Christ.
May we follow him into the new creation,
for his ascension is our glory and our hope.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Letters to My Kids: Same Sex Marriage VIII- Why I'm Not Heterosexual and I Hope You Aren't Either.

Dear Kids,

I have a confession. I’m not heterosexual, and I hope you’re not either.

One of my concerns with the debate about Same Sex Marriage- especially as argued on the basis of civil rights- is that the revision will legally redefine our most basic institution by affirming a really significant fiction. It’s not simply a fiction, but a newfangled fiction and a dehumanizing fiction. It identifies persons by something called sexuality (another newfangled creation). It says…

Hey Phil, didn't realize you were back until Rey mentioned it today (been trying to keep a low profile myself, mostly due to time).

Anyway, I'm glad to see you - you've been missed.  Looking forward to your input on stuff.  I've always appreciated your viewpoint.
