My First Missionary Experience

Well, I'm back in Florida and I have to say this mission trip to Santo Domingo has taught me much. I am still tingling from the lessons I have learned and the blessings I received. I really didn't know what to expect, I truly did not have any preexisting opinions. Personally, I didn't really see the need for international missions in today’s age. Yeah, I thought it was nice to provide aid to those who need it, and not just take one of the local kids with you as a souvenir, but I thought the enti… Continue

Hey Andrew, I came accross this ad while browsing Israeli news. It took me to the link below. It seems strange that they can overcome their problem without Jesus Christ.

Andrew,
I seriously start laughing every time that I think of the pigs (from the serpent thread). I never ever thought about the owner of those possessed pigs (I'm laughing now) until you mentioned it. That woulda REALLY sucked.

But I did. God keeps his promises. The prophecies in 1 Thessalonians and there fulfillment when those people needed it most, demonstrates that.

So that's what that for.

They were the ones Paul said, "We always thank God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers. We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ." How does this apply to us?

When did Paul live among us? When were we a model to all believers in Macedonia and Achaia?

"Us" in vs. 10 is Paul, Silas, Timothy, and the Thessalonian Paul personally knew.

Are you Philemon? Why would you think that letter is addressed to you? Why would you think anything specific must be applied to you?

You've got things backwards. If it applies to us today in the manner you claim, then it doesn't apply to those people then. By your standard, it can't apply to anyone except those who actually see the "end." And you personalize that group of people to be you.

Suppose Paul had said, "The persecution is bad. More of you will die. But Jesus is coming soon. Maybe not for you. Maybe not for another 10,000 years. But trust me. He's coming." What hope would that have been? No it wouldn't have been encouragement for them. The letter would have been round filed and forgotten. It would be meaningless. You are preaching that same meaninglessness.

It means something to us today because it has been fulfilled. God keeps his promises. Jesus returned when he said he would and did what he said he'd do. It is all historically verifiable.

For your second part. The Revelation dates itself to Nero's reign (17:10). It claims the things described are already happening now, are soon to come, and at hand. Clement of Alexandria claimed all Scripture (including John's Gospel and Revalation) were written before Paul's death by Nero. Trajan has nothing to do with it.

Josephus, Wars of the Jews, Eusebius, Church History, Book 3, and a few other early historians describe the fulfillment. The Collesium in Rome is engraved with the story of why, how, and with what it was built.

This is not a good way to carry on discussion. I can't see what you said to make sure I've responded to it all.

Andrew,

1 Cor. 15:15 ", I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed."

1 Thess. 4:14-15, "We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep."

1 Cor. and 1 Thess. are two books that are commonly agreed to be some of Paul's earlier works, AD 50-55. The church was 20-25 years old. By this time, some Christian had died of old age, diseaese, accident, and persecution. Agreed?

A major theme of 1 Thess is persecution and the coming relief. 1 Thess. 1:3, 6, 10, Acts 17:1-10.

Some of the people in both cities had "fallen asleep." In 1 Cor. 15, this is contrasted to Adam's death. Those who suffer Adam's death don't fall asleep.

In 1 Cor. 15, the purpose of the general resurrection (not Christ's resurrection) is to undo Adam's deatn. That is, it does not undo physical death.

In both passages, the people were to expect a change before all of those written to had "fallen asleep," that is, died a physical death.

In 1 Cor. 15, the change is very explicit. It is the undoing of Adam's death, the general resurrection.

1 Thes. 4 doesn't use the word "resurrection." I make the common assumption that the general topic of the later part of 1 Cor. 15 and of 1 Thess. 4 are the same.

Regardless, whatever Paul promised in both passages, Paul promised that some of those in the original audience would live to see it. Paul did not write it to us, but to them. Everyone in the original audience has now "fallen asleep." The times up. Either it happened or Paul was a false prophet.
