Disclaimer

My main aim in using this virtual space is to both be able to get my ideas down in a concrete form and to have them critiqued by other people. As such, my main aim isn't to destroy anyones faith or attack anyones beliefs. I want others to think beyond what they have been given and for others to show me where my own thinking is going wrong! Nothing I write here necessarily reflects my own belief system, but my ever-changing stream of consciousness. (Don't take this too seriously!) Have fun reading it!

Tell us about yourself
I'm currently doing a BA in Theology and Biblical Studies as part of the university of Wales. Hopefully afterwards I can carry on academic career, get a PhD and do something useful with it like teach others. I have a love and irresistible interest in Philosophy, especially when it impacts how we see God. Derrida, Foucault and Neitzsche would be my favourites at the moment... if not because they make me think harder and act differently more than any sermon has. Music has been an on/off relationship for me as I recently deleted my entire music collection as it was all illegal! I love music... I just don't have the money to fund it. You should see my bookshelf though and you will quickly realise 'where my heard is'.

You'll notice I just defined myself according to materialism and what I find entertaining, but I guess that's what happens when capitalist democracy forms your identity!
How would you describe yourself theologically?
I think any description of belief-systems involves defining oneself as against 'the other'. This is potentially damaging if political, social and religious structures are linked with beliefs in order to form their own 'official' (impersonal) identity. People will be ostracised or 'befriended' with the ulterior motive of either confrontationally or 'prayerfully' attempting to control and conform them to the collective belief-based identity. As such, I do believe in one thing that cannot be used in this way; 'there is no longer Jew or Greek, slave or free, "Male and Female" (Gen. 1:27 LXX), for we are all One 'in Christ'.'

'Vive la différence!'
Who is the greatest theologian in the last 2000 years? (Besides Biblical People!)
Douglas Campbell (Pauline soteriology - beyond both 'Justification by Faith' camp and the 'New Perspective')
N. T. Wright (Historical Jesus, especially resurrection)
Judith Lieu/Daniel Boyarin (Group-Identity theory in Christian Origins)
Elisabeth Fiorenza (Feminist re-reading of Christian Origins)
Richard Hays (Intertextualism, narrative sub-structure and subjective πιστις Χριστου)
Anthony Thiselton (Philosophical hermeneutics)
James D. G. Dunn (Christology and Pneumatology)

Very sorry Shirley, the stuff I posted is all i managed to get through... the book is so compact as it is that it took me about 3 hours and 2/3 posts just to compact a chapter down into its basic components! If you want to get to grips with it I suggest you go to www.ntwrightpage.com and listen to some of the podcasts/read some of the articles by N.T.Wright on the Historical Jesus. That's what I did anyway!

Hi Ben,

I read some of your summary notes on the book called the Challenge of Jesus. It certainly helped with my paper that I am doing on the book do you have any more summary notes. You seem to have a good understanding of the chapters. It is a hard read.

I like your theological description..."I'm a little 'this' and a little 'that'"

Beautifully ambiguous... :-)

I would have to agree with Jesse Morrell below. Your Theological stand is exactly like mine. At least on those issues. Well said.

Ben, you asked about the weather in Maine. (I find this "comment wall" kind of strange the way it works.) Maine has long, snowy, cold winters. Where I live we had 14 feet of snow this winter and they had at least two feet more than that in far northern Maine! It wasn't a particularly cold winter, though, so that was nice. The skiiers and snowmobilers were in second heaven.

The fall is beautiful with all the changing colors in the trees, particularly the maples and the air is crisp and clean.

Summer is wonderful with so many people spending as much time as they can outside, either gardening, going to the beach, hiking, biking or just playing with the kids. It doesn't get particularly hot, not often reaching over 90 degrees Fahrenheit. That's too hot for me, though. I like it around 70.

Spring is pretty with all the colors of green as the world comes alive again. I am not fond of the mosquitoes and black flies though, especially where we live where there are so many woods. I planted my garden this weekend and the back of my upper arms are just covered with bug bites.

By the way, I clicked on Send A Message when I was on Michael's page and it looked like it was going to send it privately. It looked like an email type of message. I didn't actually send it though.

Hi Ben. I updated my profile, adding a photo of the hills not far from my house. I didn't know if clicking on Send a Message on your "My Page" space would send it privately, but I see it will not. That's OK. Have a good day!
