You might be interested to know that I am studying for 3 years at Mattersey Hall Bible College in England where Robin Routledge lectures on Old Testament. I've just had him for Old Testament Survey for 6 months and he's been incredible. Can't wait...

Profile Information

Tell us about yourself
I'm English... I think that says it all. No, I don't have a strange John Cleese accent. But I can do a good impression if you like :) . Apart from that I enjoy blogging, reading blogs, listening to podcasts, reading, movies, music, and... I think that's it. I guess you'll just have to get to know me!
How would you describe yourself theologically?
I was:
Emerging but not Emergent. Conservative but not necessarily right. Charismatic but not 'weird'. Sola scriptura but not solo scriptura. Protestant but not anti-Catholic. Arminian but not anti-Calvinist. Reforming but not reformed.

After spending 4 months at Bible College, I am now:
Still emerging, still not Emergent. No longer conservative, but not liberal either. Still charismatic but not the mainstream kind. No longer sola scriptura, but more regula fidei/dual-source. Not protestant as that doesn't help to define my theology or practice very well. Neither Arminian nor Calvinist, but in the New Perspective on Paul camp. Still reforming, and still not Reformed.
Who is the greatest theologian in the last 2000 years? (Besides Biblical People!)
N.T. Wright (a biased opinion, of course!)... simply because he has had the most effect on my theology.

The Ethereal Muse

The Ethereal Muse is a blog documenting the life, thoughts and happenings of myself. You will most likely find it varied if not random depending on what mood I'm in (or muse I'm following), covering what I think to be the most important issues and topics surrounding my life at the moment. Stay a while, have a read and let me know what you think!

Paul's Confusing Attitude Toward the Role of the Torah

First off, I think it would be a good idea to let everyone know why I'm writing this. I have long been a-questing to determine what Paul's attitude was toward the role of the Jewish Law, the Torah. The issue is hugely significant to understanding what Paul is trying to say in a lot of his letters, especially Romans and Galatians. However, after much reading ('much' for a first year anyway) on Paul's attitude toward the role of the Torah, I have concluded that I have no definite idea what to thin… Continue

Did Abraham worship the wrong god? - some implications.

Exodus 6:2-3
God also spoke to Moses and said to him: 'I am YHWH. I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as
God Almighty (El Shaddai), but by my name "YHWH" I did not make myself known to them.

One of the most common names for 'god' in the Old Testament is the word 'El' and it's many combinations ('El Shaddai' being an example). 'El' is said to be the god that is worshipped by Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, before the name 'YHWH' for god was revealed to Moses at the 'burning-bush-inci… Continue

The Theological Words of Romans 5-8.

Hey guys!

I just recently did a bible study on Romans 5-8 and had a pretty long introductory chat about some interesting words Paul uses. If you want to understand what Paul is trying to say in Romans, it's usually a good idea to understand what his words mean. So, I thought I'd share with you what I talked about then... and as always, feel free to disagree and discuss things with me!

The law
Whenever Paul uses the term ‘law’, he is usually talking about what is known to Jews as the ‘To… Continue

Theology of the Last Supper

Introduction

After writing this post, it seems I have under-estimated how long and complicated forming a theology of communion from the New Testament would be! So, it looks like I'm just going to concentrate on forming of theology of the Last Supper in this post, and deal with the 'real presence' of Jesus at communion in the next one or two. It should be important first to consider the events of the last supper, as this is where the sacrament of communion finds its roots. Studying this i… Continue

Back from Seminary... Back to Blogging?

Hey guys,

I know it's been ages since I posted anything here or even stopped by, I do apologize. Unfortunately for you, I have been away studying at Seminary for the past 4 months and haven't had any free time to write anything for the blog or get involved in some good theological discussion. However, I am currently back from studies and have a ridiculous amount of free time with nothing to do. Hmmmm..... sounds like another excuse to get back into blogging!

I do have some revision to do over… Continue

Very sorry Shirley, the stuff I posted is all i managed to get through... the book is so compact as it is that it took me about 3 hours and 2/3 posts just to compact a chapter down into its basic components! If you want to get to grips with it I suggest you go to www.ntwrightpage.com and listen to some of the podcasts/read some of the articles by N.T.Wright on the Historical Jesus. That's what I did anyway!

Hi Ben,

I read some of your summary notes on the book called the Challenge of Jesus. It certainly helped with my paper that I am doing on the book do you have any more summary notes. You seem to have a good understanding of the chapters. It is a hard read.

I like your theological description..."I'm a little 'this' and a little 'that'"

Beautifully ambiguous... :-)

I would have to agree with Jesse Morrell below. Your Theological stand is exactly like mine. At least on those issues. Well said.

Ben, you asked about the weather in Maine. (I find this "comment wall" kind of strange the way it works.) Maine has long, snowy, cold winters. Where I live we had 14 feet of snow this winter and they had at least two feet more than that in far northern Maine! It wasn't a particularly cold winter, though, so that was nice. The skiiers and snowmobilers were in second heaven.

The fall is beautiful with all the changing colors in the trees, particularly the maples and the air is crisp and clean.

Summer is wonderful with so many people spending as much time as they can outside, either gardening, going to the beach, hiking, biking or just playing with the kids. It doesn't get particularly hot, not often reaching over 90 degrees Fahrenheit. That's too hot for me, though. I like it around 70.

Spring is pretty with all the colors of green as the world comes alive again. I am not fond of the mosquitoes and black flies though, especially where we live where there are so many woods. I planted my garden this weekend and the back of my upper arms are just covered with bug bites.

By the way, I clicked on Send A Message when I was on Michael's page and it looked like it was going to send it privately. It looked like an email type of message. I didn't actually send it though.

Hi Ben. I updated my profile, adding a photo of the hills not far from my house. I didn't know if clicking on Send a Message on your "My Page" space would send it privately, but I see it will not. That's OK. Have a good day!
