Confessions of An Obsessed Student

The following was a submission to the school paper for consideration... Anyone that knows me knows that I love being at DTS. It is not just being on campus and enjoying all the interaction, but it is engagement with the learning process. Some would say that I am obsessed. I seize every opportunity I can to engage the professors, both in and outside of class (especially my theology classes) and I do get a charge from being in the library. In fact, I spent many of my summer days on campus,… Continue

Another Year of Adventure

Well folks, soon I will be going very low on the radar here as I gear up for year 2 at DTS. I'm looking forward to the classes, although the work load will be intense. I started reading through the assigned portions of Wallace's Grammar that's due by Friday, and all I can say is GASP. The daily intimate fellowship with the greek is about to become a bit more close. I've tried to review the basics and vocab over the summer so I don't go in looking like a complete idiot or have to re-read Mounce A… Continue

A Trio of Transformation in Acts 3:1-10: A View from Three Sets of Eyes

I was watching this movie last night on Paul the Apostle. It made me think of this assignment I did last fall, which shows the events of Acts 3:1-10 from the perspective of 3 different sets of people: Peter, the beggar and the crowd. There we were, John and I, following our usual custom of going to the temple to say our prayers. Yes, the custom was the same but now things were different. For we just experienced the amazing power that our Master said would come, that power he promised us… Continue

God's Will and Our Individuality

In his letter to the Colossians, Paul says this prayer, "For this reason also, since the day we heard of it [their love in the Spirit], we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God" (Col 1:9-10). Paul is essentially saying if you understand Go… Continue

Vindicate Me, O Lord

This is the cry of a woman who has suffered too much loss, too much pain, too much angst. She contemplates the family disruption through divorce at age 6, the loss of her mother at age 9 and the loss of childhood innocence at age 11 through the depraved touch of a friends adult brother. She feels abandoned, disrespected, unworthy. She seeks approval, affection, love and value only to find damaged esteem, horrendous choices, uncaring men. She cries, vindicate me, O Lord according to your mercy… Continue

For Those Who Know Too Much

During my recent trip to California, my dad made a remark about the ex-husband of one his neighbors. Now they live in a very nice, gated condo community with each building consisting of 2 vertical condo units. Apparently, the ex-husband of the downstairs condo unit owner maintains active involvement in his ex-wife's life. So my dad vocalized his observation about how although the ex-husband lives just a few houses down, he always drives to the ex-wife's house. My dad was insistent that he figure… Continue

Keeping on the Nikes

Rey's Sexting Post got me to thinking of something I wrote about a year ago as a reflection of my own troubled history. I've had an unfortunate streak in the area of romantic relationships and have made many unwise choices. This has been largely attributed to clouded judgment and unhealthy perspectives due to circumstances that happened in my formative years. So I do have a soft spot for the woman mentioned in 2 Timothy 3:6-7, who open themselves up to false doctrine and unscrupulous men. I have… Continue

The Greek Verb Personality Chart

So now that we have gone through all the verb tenses and moods this year, I’m fascinated by learning how the verbs act. I struck me that they probably explain some basic personality types that influence church/theological affiliations. What a fascinating study! Present Active Indicative: indicates either a continuous or undefined action usually occurring in the present time. The Explorer: This personality type is prone to spontaneity. To them, life is a continual journey and that… Continue

The Timeless Victimization of Unique Thinkers

I find it interesting how those who gravitate towards teaching that falls outside of the bounds of historical orthodoxy, readily play the victim. For my trinitarianism class, one of the books I'm reading, For Us and Our Salvation, compiles writings of early church fathers who were fervently defending Christ against, um unique thinkers, who sought to undermine the person of Christ. Here is an excerpt of a letter written by Arius to Eusebius of Nicomedia (c 319) To his very dear lord, tContinue

The Parable of Random Thoughts

So I was just thinking about all the thoughts I think and how some actually make it into a blog post while many end up plucked up, scattered, or choked out. So here it goes: A blogger went out thinking thoughts about God, christian living, Scripture and life in general. Some thoughts fell by the wayside as soon as they sprung up and life swallowed them up. Other thoughts fell on rocky places. These were just thoughts that seem like they have merit based on Scriptural ponderings, general observ… Continue

It's Another Day: My Year in Review

I am amazed at the magical expectancy that so many place as the last digit turns one number higher. I suppose there is something refreshing at the prospect of something new. The old is past and there is hope for the future. But I think the expectant hope we so intentionally place on that one day as the calendar flips, is the same hope we can apply to the following 365 days. To wake up each morning, declare it is a new day and anticipate what God would have in store. To declare each day, a day of… Continue

A Lesson in Humility: My Journey in Messed Up Thinking

Rey's post on Bible study methods has got me thinking about how we approach our Bibles. His outline begs us to asks some really important questions of what the text is saying, especially in consideration of God's overall plan for redemption. It begs us to examine where we fit into this theme. It should beg us to consider that the Bible is God's written, inspired Word that conveys His thoughts, plans and purposes that He wishes for us to know, which He has done through such an intricate and pheno… Continue

An Ode to Greek

I'm in my first semester of the ThM program and am taking greek. The mechanics of learning it are well, grueling and very time consuming. But obviously the dividends will pay off as I learn to exegete in the original biblical language. In fact, translating portions of John's work has already been a part of our work. So I have a love-hate thing going with the greek. But since I am determined to love it, I thought nothing would be better than to express my sentiments in this poem. I think those wh… Continue

One in Christ?: A Plea for Diversity

In Paul’s letter to Philemon, he is appealing to Philemon to regard Onesimus as a brother. Not such an easy thing to do for Philemon because apparently Onesimus was not only his former slave, but transgressed against Philemon in some way (vs.11, 18). The heart of Paul’s plea is don’t look at Onesimus as a slave and someone that has wrong you. When you see him, see him as your brother in Christ. This begs the question of how do we see our brothers and sisters in Christ, especially with respect t… Continue

Why Seminary?

In less than 5 short weeks, I will be loading up a 17’ foot U-Haul truck with myself, my 10 year old son and what remains of our belongings to relocate to Dallas. I’m doing this because in August, I will be starting the Masters in Theology Program at Dallas Theological Seminary. You see I have a passion for Christians to know biblical truth in order to engage in personal and intimate knowledge of Jesus Christ. I am hoping my studies will be instrumental in providing me with the tools necessary t… Continue

An Ode to Pentecostalism

I am not a Pentecostal/Charismatic. I used to be though. But I dove into a course of study that had me re-examining some things I believed, particularly related to the sign gifts, speaking in tongues and validity of modern day prophets and apostles. I also discovered that extreme fringes of this movement have promoted some things that I don't believe correspond to biblical truth, i.e. word of faith, new revelations, etc. Given the direction my biblical studying has brought me thus far, the natu… Continue
