Theologica

a bible, theology, politics, news, networking, and discussion site

Did I mention that I am studying with a group using Max Lucado's workbook on EPHESIANS. He has some good ideas. One question he asked us to ask ourselves was (something like) "what kind of humor is not acceptable for Christians?" Yeah. I had some good answers.
Like:
Humor that has to do with someone being hurt.
Humor that makes light of sin instead of being concerned about the holiness of God
and the eternal soul of the sinner.
Humor that does not respect others as made in the image of the Glorious, beautiful, Creator God.
Yeah. I have a ways to go, too.
Of course I often wonder what we are supposed to find funny if those areas are not acceptable.
I am not that good with coming up with funny stuff anyway; but my daughter is quite gifted in that .
She jokes in the area of "foibles" often. Sometimes even that can go "wrong".
Does anyone have ideas or scripture examples or scripture guidelines?

At the class I mentioned in the post, someone refered an exchange she had with a brother at the church. She said, "Hey, we got some rain." (It has been really dry and HOT in Houston recently.) The brother said, "That's holy water." (because it was so wonderful and precious to have rain after these drought days.)
We chuckled and appreciated his humor. But he was showing appreciation to God as well as bringing a little levity.
When the class was later discussing the question I mentioned in post, we talked about how God would sometimes give people new names commemorating and event and sometimes they are humorous. Example: God named Abe and Sarah's son Isaac pointing out to Sarah that He saw her when she was laughing at the thought of her having child at 90.
